Safety Counts serves as the campus security report for the UC Berkeley Campus. In 1998, the federal government passed the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, formerly the Student Right to Know Act of 1990. This law requires colleges and universities receiving federal funding to disclose the reported instances of criminal activity on their campuses. Safety Counts, however, is much more than a collection of crime statistics. UCPD strives to make this the definitive resource for safety and crime prevention information.
The 2008-2009 edition features
- information about the new WarnMe proactive text campus alert system
- crime reporting areas map, with UCPD's "The Box"
- guidelines for how to proceed in the event of a campus wide shooter incident, and info on how to schedule a new UCPD presentation, "Tools to Survive an Active Shooter"
- a lensbaby macro shot of vintage UCPD badges by MarshaMod
